The grand re-premiere of Kazimierz Kutz’s digitally renewed „Pearl in the Crown” and the Master’s 89th birthday

The SILESIA FILM Institute and the Marshal Office of the Silesia Voivodeship invite everyone to the grand re-premiere of the digitally renewed film PEARL IN THE CROWN, directed by Kazimierz Kutz, as well as celebrations of the Master’s 89th birthday.

In November last year, the first part of Kazimierz Kutz’s Silesian trilogy, Salt of the Black Earth, had its grand re-premiere. After another three months of reconstructive work, we can now share with you the second part of the triptych – Pearl in the Crown. The film was digitally renovated by the KADR Film Studio. The costs of digital reconstruction, amounting to almost half a million PLN, were covered with the support of the Marshal Office and grants from the Polish Film Institute and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, i.a.

Kazimierz Kutz’s 89th birthday will be capped off with three special screenings of his reconstructed films and a theatrical performance of The Fifth Quarter of the Globe, based on the director’s book. There will be special guests in attendance, as well. During the grand re-premiere on February 17, Kazimierz Kutz himself will be joined by the film’s main stars, Bernard Krawczyk and Olgierd Łukaszewicz, as well as the film’s costume designer Barbara Ptak and artistic supervisor Wiesław Zdort.

Pearl in the Crown is the story of great love between a young mining couple, set in the Upper Silesia of the late ‘30s, with the miners’ successful strike struggle as its background. Learning of the planned shutdown of the „Zygmunt” coal mine, the miners call a strike. Families support the strikers, while Silesian orchestras and women in regional dresses manifest in front of the mine. Unfortunately, the miners’ petitions are downplayed by the government. The miners decide on a hunger strike, but the board remains unmoved. Only when Siersza, the strike’s leader announces that the miners will not leave the mine even if it’s flooded, management relents and signs the deal.  The film received many awards, including the Grand Prize at the International Film Festival of Panama, Acting Award for Franciszek Pieczka in Łagów during the Lubusz Film Summer and the Golden Globe at the International Film Festival in Milan.
